Running to End the Stigma of Addiction

I’m honored to be an ambassador for Shatterproof, a national nonprofit dedicated to ending the devastation that addiction causes families. I’m running the New York City marathon with the Shatterproof team on November 5th, 2017, and I’m thrilled by the opportunity to raise money and awareness for others struggling with substance abuse disorder.

Right now overdose is the leading cause of death for Americans under 50, and this can be prevented.  Shatterproof uses scientific research to prove that prevention and recovery are possible. We also believe that by sharing our own experiences with addiction, we can help break down the shame and stigma associated with the disease.

My mom has struggled with opioid and alcohol addiction for much of my life, and running has helped me greatly in my own recovery. Addiction runs in my family, so I know that I am at much greater risk of developing a substance abuse disorder. Running has helped me focus on the moment, try to live one day at a time, and develop healthier habits. Running also gives me hope— hope for my mom’s recovery, and hope for myself that I won’t do the same thing.
